Springtime in Mammoth Lakes: Bike, Golf or Ski???

May 19, 2014 | Blog | 0 comments

Some folks like to use a calendar to tell them when it’s springtime.  Others get notified when their allergies start acting up.  But for me (and many of us here in the Mammoth Lakes area), I know it is springtime when I can choose between mountain biking, skiing, or golf on any given day.

This Friday, May 23rd, Mammoth Mountain will be opening operations on both the Mountain Bike Park and the Sierra Star Golf Course.  Meanwhile, thanks to those last few late-season storms, the skiing has remained fantastic for this time of year with daily lift operations still running out of the Main Lodge area.  I went up the other day and had a great time doing gondola laps top to bottom!

And if you are on a budget, please don’t forget about all the other springtime outdoor activities that the Eastern Sierra has to offer…

Climbing – The Owens River Gorge (“The Gorge”) is an ideal place to do some sport climbing.  On those hot days, run over to the routes in the shade, and on those cooler days, it’s shirts off in the sun!  Other places like Clarks and Granite Basin are good this time of year as well….not to mention Tuolumne is on the melt-out and routes that get good sun exposure are good to go if you are looking for some multi-pitch climbing.

Fishing – It’s gonna be another drought year, so get your fishing poles out now while the creeks, rivers, lakes and streams still have a good amount of water and flow in them.  Visit the Mammoth Fly Guide (http://www.mammothflyguide.com/category/fishing_report/) for updates on where those fish are biting!

Hiking – Get those hiking boots out and start getting after the trails while the crowds are low, the wildlife is active, and the days are long!  Call me and I’ll happily give you suggestions on my favorite trails and advise on what may be melted out or not.

Cycling – Oh yeah you roadies, get them skinny tires ready to go!  The Mammoth scenic loop has been great for a quick lunchtime out and back.  And if you want something longer, the roads are all looking good.   I rode out to Benton Hot Springs (http://www.historicbentonhotsprings.com/) a few weeks ago via the 120 out by Mono Lake.  As usual, it made for an epic day followed by some hot spring tubbing at my favorite campground in CA!

So get out of that SoCal heat and away from all those fires and plan your Memorial Day weekend up here in beautiful Mammoth Lakes, CA!
