One of the main attractions drawing visitors to the eastern sierra during the summer is the annual Jazz Jubilee, Starting July 10th and finishing up on the 14th. This event spans multiple locations and provides audiences with a jazz experience unlike any other. This event, started by Thelma and Elliot Thompson in 1989, had a very humble beginning with only 2 bands and a single 5-hour show. The next year however it grew dramatically, 6 bands preformed and over 1,000 guests were drawn to the festival. Today thousands of visitors enjoy a diverse schedule of bands, as well as venues, that cater to every type of jazz enthusiast.

This summer marks the 25th anniversary of the Jazz Jubilee, ensuring a fantastic line up of performers.  The festivities kick off on Wednesday night, July 10th with the pre-Jubilee show, $20 for non-badge holders and free to those who have purchased an event badge. Thursday marks the official start of the Jubilee with bands scheduled to preform throughout the day at varying locations. Guests are able to buy badges, online or at one of the event sites, that gets them into to any event, throughout the Jubilee, or tickets can be purchased per show. An all-inclusive adult badge is $140, $45 for college students, $15 for youth, and free for children less than 11 years of age. Just a few of the sites for this years event include, The Holler, Petras, Edison Theater, The village stage (no badge or ticket required), and Little Eagle. For more information regarding sites and their location click here.  A sampling of the bands comprising this years line up include: Cornet Chop Suey, Good Livin’, and High Street Jazz Band.

One of the special events included in the festivities is the performance by local Jazz camp students. These students, ranging from 13-17 years of age, spend a week learning the art of playing Jazz. Every year professional, and often well known, jazz musicians take up the task of coaching these students and prepping them for the end of camp performance that takes place on one of the Jazz Jubilee stages. This event is included with the badge cost. Come out and support our local youth talent!

If you have children tagging along with you don’t worry, The Holler site has a few kids activities as well as great food and drinks catered by local restaurants that the entire family will enjoy. Jazz accessories are also available for purchase at this main site.

Don’t miss out on one of the most anticipated events this summer!
