In order to get the most out of your stay, and the incredible Eastern Sierra summer, take a rest day and try kayaking on one of the many pristine lakes surrounding Mammoth.

There are few better summer experiences than paddling out on a calm lake that perfectly reflects the surrounding mountains. The hundreds of lakes around Mammoth guarantee that you will find the perfect kayaking experience, whether you are looking for a fun day with the family outside, a new skill, or a way to unwind. The kayaking paddle stroke is a skill that can be picked up easily, which makes it a great activity for the whole family. Although you may become absorbed in the surrounding vistas, don’t forget to look down! Eastern Sierra alpine lakes have incredibly clear water that allows for an exciting window into the cerulean depths.

Eager to try out the sport but don’t have your own boat? Not a problem! There are multiple marinas in Mammoth Lakes and the surrounding area that offer hourly, half-day, and full days rates for kayaks, paddle boards, motor boats, and pontoon boats. In the Mammoth Lakes Basin, Twin Lakes, Pokonobe Resort and Marina, Lake Mary Marina, Crystal Crag Lodge, and Lake George Boat landing offer kayak, stand up paddleboard, and motorized boat rentals.

If you are looking to escape the crowds try Convict Lake Resort, just 10 minutes South on 395. This lake sits in a cirque of marbled peaks and is ringed by old growth aspens. To get the most out of Convict Lake head over in the early morning to see the sun hit the mountains, which creates a stunning reflection. Crowley Lake Fish Camp, also south of town, offers a few kayak options and is the perfect choice fore exploring hidden coves.  Caldera Kayaks offers kayak rentals and lessons on Crowley Lake.

June Lake and Mono Lake are two more amazing kayaking destinations just a short drive North up the 395. June Lake is the perfect destination if you are looking for beach time. Mammoth Kayaks and Paddleboards offers a variety rentals right next to the beach from 9:30am-4:00pm “ish” every day. If you would rather explore tufa towers and learn about local history Mono Lake is the perfect spot. Caldera Kayaks offers guided tours to Mono Lake’s islands and along the shoreline.
