#JanuBURIED has turned into #FebruBURIED!

For those of you following Mammoth Lakes’s epic snowfall this season, you probably already know that Mammoth Mountain Ski Area surpassed 512 inches of total snowfall for the season on February 28, 2017.  That’s a whopping 43 feet of snow and it’s only mid-March yet!  February saw an additional 13 feet of snow dropped on top of an already incredible base that was laid down during our record January (aptly dubbed “#JanuBURIED“).  Right now, Mammoth is only 13 feet from breaking the all-time snowfall record of 668 inches set in the 2010-2011 season.  With March, typically a big snow month, and April still to come, it’s almost certain that the previous record will be exceeded.  After five drought years, the locals (and visitors) are stoked on all the snow, to say the least.

So what does this continued heavy snowfall mean?  Well, for one,Mammoth Mountain has already announced that it is staying open until July 4th or beyond.  In 16 years of living in Mammoth, I have never seen the mountain stay open past Independence Day.  Is anyone up for skiing in August?  The town seems to have caught up on snow removal, and brigades of semi trucks have been hauling snow out of town daily to make room for new snow.  Lifts on the mountain are now so close to the snow level that some of them are buried overnight with each new storm and the chairs have had to be dug out by the lift crew and other mountain employees every morning (sitting next to a liftie at the bar?  Buy him a drink…trust me, he deserves it).  Both the town and the mountain are seeing huge increases in visitor and skier numbers as Mammoth Lakes and Mammoth Mountain have been broadcast on news and weather channels across the country for the unbelievable amount of snow falling and the unparalleled skiing conditions.  All in all, this snow has been a godsend for both the water shortage and the ski industry in the Eastern Sierra.

Our real estate market here in Mammoth has been getting progressively busier since November, due in part by the buzz surrounding this epic season and an increase in visitation.  Want to keep up with the latest trends in our market?  Sign up here to get my biweekly “Propportunites™” newsletter, a great low pressure way to keep an eye on new listings, best buys, and more!
